The village board of Wilmette unanimously approved an ordinance to push back against civil-immigration enforcement efforts by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), restricting village staff from cooperating with immigration status checks, barring the use of certain public spaces for federal enforcement, and directing staff to document federal agent conduct.
The policy is described as a protective move for immigrant laborers and residents—while the board acknowledges the limits of its legal authority, they say this is a meaningful step toward safeguarding community trust.
